Spoken Word

Take writing off the page and onto the stage! This workshop teaches students how to craft powerful poems and perform them with presence and emotion. Participants learn about rhythm, voice, and stage confidence while working toward a live reading or slam-style performance.

Playwriting

Bring a story to life from idea to stage. Students work together to write scenes, develop characters, and explore themes that matter to them. By the end of the program, participants present an original short play or staged reading, building teamwork, writing, and public speaking skills along the way.

Why It Matters: These programs don’t just teach writing... they change lives.

First let me say that I have never seen my daughter more lit up by a teacher than I have seen her by you this year. You've really inspired her. Thank you for that!

What makes J Rose truly remarkable is her deep commitment to community. Whether she’s working with youth in after-school programs, creating transformative spaces for women on Rikers Island, or using art as a tool for healing and self-discovery, her work is rooted in purpose. She is not just an artist; she is a cultural worker, a bridge-builder, and a force for change.

La Bruja

JRose has a vulnerability and strength that few beings can express with a lighthearted warmth and encouraging energy. Courageous on the microphone, spitting with a lyrical gift that makes people listen. JRose is a producer, a creator, with a great sense of purpose, having her on my team at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has elevated our poetry community.
